Why Just Get Adjusted, When You Can Get Functional?

Person holding their neck and lower back to illustrate muscle and joint pain with EmVital laser therapy for temporary pain relief, improved circulation, muscle relaxation, and functional rehabilitation.

Elko’s miners keep the state running on bad backs, blown-out shoulders and knees that don’t bend like they used to. There’s a next step after the adjustment — and it’s about what your body can do, not just what it feels like.

If you work a shift at a mine, you already know the routine. Something tweaks. You tough it out for a week. You get adjusted, you feel loose for a day or two, and then you climb back into the same seat, the same PPE, the same twelve hours of vibration and torque and overhead reaching, and it’s back.

That’s not a knock on your chiropractor. Adjustment does something real — it restores motion to a joint that’s stopped moving well. The problem is what happens after. The muscle that was compensating is still weak. The core that stopped firing during your last injury still isn’t firing. The tissue that’s been irritated for eight months is still irritated. So the alignment doesn’t hold, because nothing is holding it.

Getting adjusted asks: is this joint moving? Getting functional asks: can you carry your grandkid up the stairs without paying for it tomorrow?

Pain management is a floor. Function is the goal.

At Elko Replenish Med Spa, the first question we ask isn’t “where does it hurt.” It’s this:

Name three things this is stopping you from doing.

Loading elk. Sleeping on your right side. Sitting through a twelve-hour shift without shifting every ten minutes. Getting off the couch without the arm push. Those three answers become your baseline — and they’re what we re-measure against, alongside validated tools your provider will walk you through, so progress is documented and not just a feeling.

That’s the difference between managing a symptom and restoring a capability. One keeps you at your current ceiling. The other raises it. And as you age, that ceiling is the whole ballgame — because the men and women who stay independent at 75 aren’t the ones who avoided pain. They’re the ones who kept their strength, their mobility and their nervous system online.

The technology we use, and what each piece is actually for

We’re a nurse practitioner–led practice, and every plan is built after an assessment — not sold off a menu. Here’s the toolkit, in plain language.

EmVital — laser therapy for deep tissue

EmVital uses BTL’s TriHIL™ technology: an ultrasonic sensor, an infrared camera and dynamic laser patterns working together so energy is delivered to the right depth, at the right temperature, without a clinician holding a wand against your skin. What you feel is a deep, soothing warmth. No needles, no downtime, no drugs. Most people describe it as the most relaxing part of their week.

Cleared use: temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, aches and stiffness, temporary relaxation of muscle spasm, and temporary increase in local blood circulation.

Emsculpt Neo Functional — HIFEM + radiofrequency

Most people know Emsculpt Neo as a body-contouring device. There’s a second mode almost nobody in Elko is talking about: Functional. Same technology — high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy plus radiofrequency — but the settings are tuned for restoration rather than sculpting. It shouldn’t feel like a workout. It should feel like a very good massage.

What it’s doing: recruiting muscle contractions you can’t produce voluntarily, especially in the deep stabilizers that go quiet after an injury and never fully come back. That’s the “holding” part of the equation — the reason an adjustment stops sliding.

At ERMS, functional work comes before aesthetic work. If your low back doesn’t stabilize, we’re not sculpting anything.

Exomind — TMS for the part nobody talks about

Chronic pain and chronic mood problems travel together, and mining culture is not famous for saying so out loud. Exomind delivers transcranial magnetic stimulation — a non-invasive, drug-free approach cleared as an adjunct for major depressive disorder in adults. It is not a pain treatment, and we won’t pitch it as one. But if the injury took your sleep, your patience and your motivation with it, that piece deserves care too. We track it with validated wellbeing scales, same as everything else.

How it works together

  • Assessment first. Functional limitations, history, and standardized measures — before anyone touches a device.
  • Sequenced, not stacked. Order matters. EmVital typically precedes Emsculpt Neo Functional so tissue is warm and receptive before we ask muscle to work.
  • RNs, not medical assistants. Your sessions are delivered by registered nurses under NP oversight, with settings titrated to you.
  • Re-measured. Your three things get re-asked. If the number isn’t moving, the plan changes.

This works alongside your chiropractor, not instead of them

We’re not asking you to fire anybody. Keep the adjustment. Keep the PT if you’ve got one. What we add is the layer that makes those things stick — circulation and comfort in the tissue, strength in the muscle, and a body that holds its own alignment between visits.

You’ve got twenty more years of work in you. Let’s make sure your body agrees.

The men and women working Nevada’s mines spend their careers taking care of everyone but themselves. Prevention-first care isn’t a luxury add-on for that crowd — it’s the difference between retiring into a life you want and retiring into a recliner.
